Breed Overview
The Ganjam is Odisha's leading meat breed, reared across the Ganjam, Gajapati and Puri districts of the state's south-east. Tall and predominantly black, it is a striking, well-grown goat valued for good meat production in the region's tropical climate.
Kept largely by pastoral communities, the Ganjam is hardy and adaptable, thriving on extensive grazing and forming an important part of the rural livestock economy of coastal and southern Odisha.

🐐Physical Characteristics
A tall, well-grown breed, usually black though brown and white animals occur. It has long legs, medium drooping ears and backward-curving horns, giving a good frame and dressing percentage for meat.
🥛Milk Production
A low 0.5–1 litre/day — enough only to raise kids, as this is a dedicated meat breed rather than a dairy animal.
🌦Climate Suitability
Well-adapted to the tropical climate of coastal and southern Odisha. Hardy and heat-tolerant, it does well on extensive grazing with minimal shelter.
🌾Feeding Requirements
Largely grazing-based, supplemented with a little concentrate for breeding and finishing stock. Efficient on local browse and crop residues, keeping costs low.
