Breed Overview

The Orenburg is a Russian fibre breed from the harsh, cold Orenburg region of the southern Urals, famous as the source of the down used in the legendary gossamer Orenburg shawls. Usually grey or black, it grows an exceptionally fine, soft under-down beneath a coarse guard coat.

Bred to survive brutal continental winters, the Orenburg produces some of the finest goat down in the world. It is a cold-climate breed whose fibre quality depends on severe winters, so in India it would suit only the coldest high-altitude regions.
